Where we went in '98
Shropshire
In January the group stayed at the simple Wheathill hostel in Shropshire, which sadly has since been closed down. Despite it being very cold the group managed some walks in the nearby rolling countryside.

A weekend staying at Cheddar hostel proved to be a very popular event with a near-record number of members attending. Visits to the nearby Gorge and Glastonbury included sight-seeing and tea-shops.
Isle of Wight
An smaller group of people crossed over the Solent by ferry to stay at the Totland Bay hostel which is only a few miles from the famous Needles. On Saturday they took the bus across to the Newport in the centre of the Island and then enjoyed a fine ridge walk along the Tennyson Trail back to the Hostel. Sunday saw then visiting the nearby Needles and enjoying the cafes of Yarmouth in the sunshine.
North Wales
Easter trip to Llangollen and Lledr Valley hostels was well attended despite the monumental trip there during one of the worst floods and bad weather in living memory. Despite that the group had an unexpected bonus when deep snow fell on the nearby mountains leading to some excellent hill walking.
Peak District
A weekend in Peak District staying at the newly decorated Youlgreave Hostel nearly turned into a disater when the hostel discovered that they had double-booked us for the Saturday night with another group. Full marks to the wardens who made alternative arrangements for us to stay at two large cottages in the village.
Northern France
Annual cycle-camping weekend in Brittany was succesfull with plenty of French bread, cheese and wine being consumed.

The main party stayed at Ilfracombe hostel and participated in some walks along the cliff tops and beaches of this beatiful cornetr of the country. Meanwhile three other members walked from Minehead hostel to Illfracombe via Lynton hostel - meeting other members of the group who were camping at Lynton.
Bavarian Alps
Four members of the group spent two weeks camping and hutting in this quieter section of the spectacular Alps.
South Wales
The August Bank Holiday weekend was spend at Ystradfellte hostel. Once more the weather held and provided clear views across to the Brecons from the Black Mountains where we were walking. During the evening a few members ascended into the nearby Porth-y-Ogaf cave for some exploration.
